The school here surprisingly lacks a homeroom teacher to coordinate and manage the children or to regularly initiate communication with parents. The main form of communication is during the annual parent-teacher conferences, which, for overseas parents, is only possible through remote meetings. In a well-known public school with over a thousand students, each parent has only 10 minutes to communicate with each subject teacher. Parents with limited English proficiency need to compete for a limited number of multicultural staff to act as translators. Therefore, the parent-teacher conference becomes a crucial yet challenging event for many parents of international students.
